Colorless to light yellow viscous liquid. The pure product is a colorless, amorphous crystal that is miscible with water. Soluble in water, methanol, ethanol. It has a large dissociation constant in water and can form stable chelates and complexes with metal ions. It can form stable adducts with compounds containing active oxygen to keep active oxygen stable. Good chlorine resistance. The content of industrial products is generally 50% ~ 62% colorless to light yellow viscous transparent aqueous solution, which is a multi-acid and easily soluble in water. HEDP is an important chelating agent, which has a stable chelating structure with several metal ions and is not easily hydrolyzed. It does not decompose under general photothermal conditions, but it is not resistant to the action of oxidation biocides, and about 30% of the HEDP with residual chlorine of 5mg/L is decomposed.

It is prepared by the reaction of phosphorus trichloride, glacial acetic acid and water. Or by the reaction of orthophosphoric acid, acetic anhydride and acetyl chloride. It can also be prepared by the reaction of phosphorous acid and acetic anhydride. It can also be reacted with orthophosphate and acetic anhydride.

It is a scale inhibitor and corrosion inhibitor for boiler and heat exchanger, a complexing agent for cyanamide free electroplating, a soap chelating agent, a cleaning agent for metal and non-metal. As a water treatment agent, HEDP has stable structure and is not easy to hydrolyze. HEDP is a cathodic corrosion inhibitor, and its corrosion inhibition rate is about 4 times higher than that of inorganic polyphosphate. Iron ion in water has a significant effect on the corrosion inhibition of HEDP. When the iron ion concentration is greater than 3mg/L, the corrosion inhibition of HEDP decreases exponentially with the increase of iron ion concentration. HEDP has synergistic effect with other corrosion inhibitors and scale inhibitors, such as chromate, polyphosphate, molybdate, silicate, nitrite, zinc salt, polycarboxylate and its derivatives, and can improve drug efficacy. The dosage is low, and the dosage used in the composite formula is generally 2 ~ 5mg/L.
