Nature
Colorless acicular crystal or white crystal. A very thin solution has a sweet taste. Impure products become light red or red under the action of light and air, and change color faster in case of alkali. The rate is 11,54,178. Flash point 79.44 ºC (closed cup). 85ºC (open cup), spontaneous combustion point 715ºC, steam gas and air mixture combustion limit 17% ~ 8.6%. Flammable and corrosive. Toxic. 1g phenol is dissolved in about 15mL water (0.67%, can be dissolved in any proportion after heating at 25ºC), 12mL benzene. Soluble in ethanol, ether, chloroform, glycerin, carbon disulfide, petroleum jelly, volatile oil, fixed oil, strong alkali aqueous solution. Almost insoluble in petroleum ethers. The pH of the aqueous solution is about 6.0.
Use
It is also an important organic chemical raw material used in oilfield industry. Phenolic resin, caprolactam, bisphenol A, salicylic acid, picric acid, pentachlorophenol, phenolphthalein, n-acetylethoxyaniline and other chemical products and intermediates can be prepared with it. It is widely used in chemical raw materials, alkyl phenols, synthetic fibers, plastics, synthetic rubber, medicine, pesticides, spices, dyes, coatings and oil refining industries.
