Nature
Colorless transparent smoking liquid with strong pungent odor. It is a strong acid. It can be miscible with water in any proportion and form an azeotrope higher than the boiling point of both. It is miscible with many organic solvents, but insoluble in hydrocarbons. Flammable, when long-term storage above 30 ° C, formic acid will slowly decompose and release carbon monoxide. Its vapor and air form an explosive mixture, which causes combustion and explosion in case of open fire and high heat energy. Reacts with strong oxidants. It has strong corrosion. Corrosion of aluminum, cast iron, steel, certain plastics, rubber and coatings.
Use
Formic acid and its aqueous solution can dissolve many metals, metal oxides, hydroxides and salts, and the resulting formate can be dissolved in water, so it can be used as a chemical cleaning agent. Formic acid does not contain chloride ions and can be used for cleaning equipment containing stainless steel materials. Formic acid is volatile and easy to be completely removed after cleaning, so it can be used in residue sensitive cleaning projects. At the cleaning concentration, formic acid is non-toxic and harmless to the human body, and the corrosion of metals is not as strong as inorganic acids, so it is a safe cleaning agent.
