Colorless transparent hexagonal flake crystals. Soluble in ethanol, ether, carbon tetrachloride and other organic solvents, insoluble in benzene. It can form complex with many inorganic and organic compounds. Anhydrous aluminum chloride has a strong water absorption, and reacts with water or steam to release heat and produce toxic corrosive gases. Corrosive to many metals especially in the presence of moist air.
