Nature
Colorless transparent crystal, often containing two molecules of crystal water. When heated to 98 ~ 100ºC, oxalic acid hydrate loses crystal water. Anhydrous oxalic acid is a colorless, odorless solid with delixing properties. It has two crystal forms, diamond and monoclinic. At room temperature, rhombic oxalic acid crystals are thermodynamically stable, while monoclinic oxalic acid crystals are thermodynamically metastable. The melting point and density of rhombic oxalic acid crystals are slightly higher than that of monoclinic oxalic acid crystals. Anhydrous oxalic acid melting point 189.5ºC (decomposition). Partial decomposition begins at 157ºC I When accelerated heating, all oxalic acid is decomposed to form formic acid, carbon monoxide and water. Soluble in water and alcohol, slightly soluble in ether, insoluble in benzene, chloroform and petroleum ether. Risk of burning in high heat, open flame or contact with oxidants. Decomposition by heating produces toxic gases.
Preparation
The furnace gas is refined under pressure and countercurrent contact with sodium hydroxide solution at a certain temperature to produce sodium formate. Sodium formate aqueous solution was concentrated by evaporation and separated by centrifuge to obtain sodium formate crystal. The sodium formate is converted into sodium oxalate in the calciner, the sodium carbonate is removed by washing and filtration, and the lime is added to the reaction. The resulting calcium oxalate is leached and broken down with sulfuric acid. Calcium sulfate is leached and oxalic acid crystals obtained are refined by recrystallization. Or with a mixture of 30% ~ 40% sulfuric acid and 20% ~ 25% nitric acid and vanadium pentoxide catalyst, under a certain temperature and pressure to oxidize glycol. Oxalic acid can also be obtained from carbohydrates such as glucose, sucrose, starch, dextrin and syrup by oxidation of nitric acid and sulfuric acid in the presence of vanadium catalyst. The crude product is redissolved with mother liquor and hot water, and then obtained by degreasing, separation, filtration and recrystallization.
Use
Mainly used as reducing agent and bleach, dyeing industry mordant, also used to extract rare metals, synthesis of various oxalates, oxalates and oxalylammonium and so on.
